Jazz is the truly American dance and music form. Uprooted: The Journey of Jazz Dance features the voices and experiences of multigenerational choreographers and dancers who know that contemporary dance continues to evolve from African-inspired traditions. Polyphonic in its scope, this new documentary features not only renowned artists such as Debbie Allen, Chita Rivera, and Walter Painter, but also those lesser known or forgotten yet highly influential dancers like Pepsi Bethel, Frank Hatchett, and JoJo Smith. This holistic approach to the genre of jazz dance allows for deeper perspectives beyond a traditionally biographic approach to a few established icons. “A fascinating piece of social history — whether or not you think you’re interested in jazz dance.” – The Guardian (Khadifa Wong, 2021, 93 minutes)
