Academy Cinemas in association with NZ Film Commission and Suffrage 125 are proud to present There She Goes, a selection of pioneering films made by women in the latter half of the 20th century in which the material experiences of womanhood as formed by race, class, sexuality, and nationality were critically represented and deconstructed through the medium of film. There She Goes presents a small selection of women’s cinematic output, endeavouring to highlight the radical work done by women within the (obstacle-ridden) field of cinema. These filmmakers not only succeeded in propelling the stories of women and other minority subjects into the limelight, but also radicalised the medium of cinema itself.
It is crucial to note that there are many titles omitted here not by choice but by accessibility. The archiving, restoring, digitising, and distributing of women’s cinema remains sorely lacking and many titles proved too difficult to obtain, particularly the work of woman filmmakers outside of Europe and the USA. We hope to see this becomes less of a barrier as women’s cinema continues to garner the recognition, support and protection it’s due.
