Presented in partnership with Fabrica, as part of Scalarama, Ildikó Enyedi’s (Body and Soul, winner of the Golden Bear at the 2017 Berlin Film Festival) acclaimed debut, a film about the magical promise of modernity, just when the collective dreams of humanity were fulfilled by wondrous developments in technological innovation.

The film tells the story of identical twins Dóra and Lilli, born in Budapest at the very moment that Thomas Edison unveils his incandescent bulb to a world dazzled with awe. Separated in childhood, the sisters’ lives follow distinct directions—the former as a hedonistic courtesan and the latter as a feminist anarchist—under the tumultuous reign and cultural upheaval of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, until they cross paths again on the Orient Express on the eve of the old century. As the film darts across numerous locations around the globe inundated with historical references, the sisters’ journey—both mental and physical—witnesses a world of constant change shaped by the furthest stretches of the human imagination, and asks important questions on the
limits of social progress.

Shot in luminous black and white and awarded the Golden Camera at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival, My 20th Century is a feast for the senses that pays tribute to the cheerful exuberance of early cinema and to the revolutionary ideas that captivated the world with inspiration and enchantment.

Introduction by Dr Emre Çağlayan, author of Poetics of Slow Cinema.
