Enjoy a month of cinema every September with 1000s of screenings taking place across the UK and beyond. From multiplexes to pop-up cinemas, everyone is invited to take part and celebrate watching films together on the big screen.

A September celebration of cinema, inspired by the Scala Cinema, for a new generation of film lovers. Soul sisters with Directed by Women.

2019 will see the ninth edition of Scalarama, a perfect opportunity to start a new adventure in cinema, support local projects and has encouraged film fans to start screening films themselves – with the motto being Fill the Land with Cinemas!

Over 700 different cinemas, film clubs, venues and first timers have taken part in Scalarama since 2011. Check the map below for previous locations and events. Several cities come together to support local events. Check out Scalaramas in Edinburgh – Glasgow – Leeds – Liverpool – Sheffield – Brighton for more information.

Seeking Short Films #DirectedbyWomen for our 5th annual night of screenings this Labor day, Monday September 2 at Crystal Lake event space in Brooklyn, NY. The Shorts Of All Sorts event is organized and curated by Jennifer Dean and Eric Rice as a part of the worldwide Directed by Women Celebration.

#DirectedbyWomen is an initiative begun by Barbara Ann O’Leary five years ago which inspires people to create their own grassroots events celebrating film directed by female filmmakers #DirectedbyWomen: September 1-30, 2019 . During this celebration, film lovers will gather together in their communities around the world for film screenings and guest filmmaker visits, all designed to focus attention on women film directors and their work.

Last year Shorts Of All Sorts screened at Videology in Brooklyn to a sold-out crowd. This year we are moving to a larger screening room in Crystal Lake Bar, also in Brooklyn.

Great chance to network with other women in film and simply have fun watching movies!

We are looking for shorts of all sorts less than 10 minutes in length – directed by women. For those who are able to attend there will be a Q&A with the filmmakers after the event.

Jennifer Dean and Eric Rice are also working on a feature documentary celebrating the history of female filmmakers in the U.S. and exploring the challenges they face – the2ndSexandthe7thArt.com.

Awards & Prizes

There will be no charge for admission to the screenings. The celebration is purely for the art of watching and talking about the work!

Rules & Terms

The films need to (a) be directed by women, (b) not exceed 10 minutes in length and (c) be available for screening (no exhibition conflicts of any kind).

The shorts must have English subtitles/dialogue or be able to be viewed by an English speaking audience sans subtitles

A SOCIAL-CHANGE DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING + COMMMUNITY ACTIVISM YOUTH PROGRAM

Girls’ Voices Now is a free program offered to 12 girls, ages 14-18, from low-income communities in Los Angeles. During this full-time, five-week summer program, the participants learn how to produce their first short documentary from start to finish, and how to use their films to affect positive social change in their communities. Thank you to Mount Saint Mary’s University, where our program is taking place!

Our curriculum combines concrete media literacy skills with leadership, critical thinking, and cooperation skills to unlock participants’ full potential in their future academic and professional prospects. This is the only program in Los Angeles that teaches young women from low-income and underrepresented neighborhoods how to produce short films and how to use those films to affect change and make a real difference in their communities.

Participants have reported feeling more confident in themselves, their media making skills and their ability to speak up thanks to our program. Among the alumni entering college this year, 100% of them think that taking part in Girls’ Voices Now helped them with their admission process – including one participant who was accepted to Columbia University! In addition, all 4 short films produced in 2018 were selected to a total of 11 youth film festivals, and 2 won first prizes. Altogether, they have reached over 6.3 million viewers as of spring 2019.

Directed by Women Spain es un festival no competitivo. No hay categorías. No hay secciones. No hay premios. La selección de cortometrajes y películas de ficción que pertenecen a la programación final son elegidas del total de trabajos recibidos a través de las plataformas de inscripción online Filmfreeway y Festhome.
