Today is Day 1 of the 10th edition of the #DirectedbyWomen Worldwide Film Viewing Party, which runs all month long. I chose to start the celebration by watching Carol Nguyen’s exquisite short film Nanitic on Vimeo.
I’ve been moved by Carol’s work since I first saw her stop motion animation project Uprooted, which won Heartland Film’s High School Competition in 2013. Carol’s work was part of what inspired me to launch the #DirectedbyWomen global initiative. It seemed so very clear to me that many many many women and girls were making remarkable films. I wanted to be sure that more and more film lovers learned about and turned their film viewing to their work.
I had no idea that when I started #DirectedbyWomen it would spark film festivals and other film viewing possibilities that would continue to run 10 years and counting. This year has been a busy one for me and I’ve not had the time to spend gathering information about how people are choosing to celebrate, but the worldwide film viewing party has a life of its own.
Directed by Women Spain’s festival begins on the 4th at Cineteca Madrid.
Directed by Women Turkey’s festival runs from September 13 – 15.
How are you choosing to celebrate the amazing work of women film directors during the global party?
I look forward to hearing from you on Threads. You can find the #DirectedbyWomen account here. I’ll also be sharing more during the month and beyond on my Patreon page. Your support would be welcome. There really is so much brilliant film to celebrate…
