The Headless Woman & Directed By Women Spain presents : De Noche y De Pronto (Suddenly One Night)

September 8, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm UTC+1

What an extraordinary film Lucrecia Martel’s The Headless Woman is. You’ll leave The Headless Woman wanting to see it again” – THE TELEGRAPH

Veronica is driving in Salta a northwestern Argentina region when her mobile phone distracts her and she runs over something—but drives on. On the days following this incident, she fails to recognise the feelings that bond her to things and people. The police confirm that there was no accident and everything returns to normal until the news of a gruesome discovery again worries everyone. Veronica begins to have a meltdown, thinking she may have killed someone. Was it an animal? A child? Or nothing at all?

Mysterious, dark and beautifully crafted Martel’s tale of guilt and pain doesn’t end the moment that the lights go up, the film stays with you for a few days later. The Headless Woman provokes more questions than answers as life sometimes do. It’s not a film just to be watched but to feel. It’s definitely an experience not to be missed.

For this event, we are delighted to welcome for the second time Karolina Ginalska a Lecturer in English Language at Liverpool University, and also undertaking an MA in Film Studies at London UCL. She will provide a brief introduction to The Headless Women and will lead an exciting debate after

Also screening “De Noche Y De Pronto “( Suddenly One Night ) a short directed in 2013 by Arantxa Echevarria. This film has been especially selected by #directedbywomenspain as part of Scalarama strand #directedbywomen . This is the first time the film will be screened in Liverpool and the director has agreed for us to show it for this very especial occasion.
De Noche y De Pronto is set in a deserted apartment building during the Christmas season, Maria is startled to receive a visit from a desperate man claiming to be her upstairs neighbour whose apartment has been broken into by thieves. Maria will be soon descending into an anguish nightmare.

This awarded winning short was filmed entirely during the night time with only two actors. Echevarria’s major challenge was to combined the strength of two great performances with rapid camera movements to reveal how women experience fear. Echevarria wants to show how “feminine fear”, fear to the real things in life, is missing from the horror genre that is mainly dominated by men. As she declared in a recent interview ” I think that not enough women direct horror, and I think that we need to make all sorts of films in all kinds of genres. And whenever women direct small, socially aware films, intimate films, people say It’s a Women’s Film. Ugh. I hate female stereotypes. I’m very feminist, and I know all that we can offer.”
