Meaningful Movies | ‘A Quiet Inquisition’ Screening
September 23, 2016 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm UTC+10
Amnesty International presents the latest edition of Meaningful Movies with ‘A Quiet Inquisition.’ This film tells the story of an OBGYN Doctor working in a public hospital in Nicaragua. We follow her colleagues and herself as they struggle with the harrowing implications of a new law preventing the termination of any pregnancy for any reason. They are forced to chose between prosecution for using love saving medical procedures and the potenitally deadly alternatives.
This law has brought Nicaragua in line with their neighbour El Salvador who has been enforcing a similar policy for over a decade. Amnesty International’s global campaign, My Body My Rights is working to stop the control and criminalization of sexuality and reproductive rights.
On the night we will have a petition to sign for the release of Teodora del Carmen Vásquez who was sentenced to 30 years in prison for “aggravated homicide” after suffering a still-birth at work.In El Salvador women like Teodora who miscarry or suffer a still-birth during pregnancy are routinely suspected of having had an ‘abortion’. Abortion under any circumstance is a crime in El Salvador, even in cases of rape, incest, or where a woman’s life is at risk.
Keep an eye on our event page for more details about the film, the petition and guest speakers for the evening.
