DREAMSTATES: Anisia Uzeyman & Saul Williams

__________
#CONTEXT

Written by Rwandan-born Anisia Uzeyman in her directorial debut, DREAMSTATES seeks to excavate the “haunting stuff that America is carrying” as an outsider to this country: one must necessarily detach from temporal and geographic boundaries to do this. A decontextualized Americana becomes a backdrop against which the lovers’ interactions are juxtaposed.

Saul Williams, bringing both his musical and acting talents to his character, composes original material, and the journey through his songwriting process becomes almost analogous with the journey through this haunted America. But the foil to these dreams and their wondrous magical potential exists a nightmare: a failing relationship, the American dream deferred.

And herein lies a set of paralleled and irreconcilable tensions: an almost impossible renewal of that deferred dream, a desire to leave a relationship to simply begin again and the centrality of memory within that desire, an impossible restarting of temporal processes that simply cannot be.

__________
#META

Filmed in thirty-two states over the course of just forty-two days within a prefaced context of an uninhabited America, the film’s iPhone cinematography enables and presents a boundless blackness unconfined by structures, people, and attitudes as well as temporal and geographical boundaries.

The film stars acclaimed poet and actor Saul Williams, CX KIDTRONIK (Nine Inch Nails, Saul Williams), Beau Sia (Rachel Getting Married), Guillermo Brown (Pegasus Warning), and William Nadylam (Claire Denis’ White Material), as well as Anisia Uzeyman (Alain Gomis’ Tey).
