Directed By Women Hamilton County Viewing Party

September 10, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm UTC-4

Tickets on sale Friday, August 5. $25 in advance $30 at the door.

Do you know only 9% movies of movies are directed by women? In recent years, there has been an outcry and concerted effort to expand women’s presence and visibility behind the camera throughout Hollywood.

Gals Guide to the Galaxy is addressing the gap at a local level with a unique event, by partnering with Directed by Women Catalyst to put Hamilton County on the world-wide viewing map.

Three women-directed films will be shown at alternate times, followed by panels and discussions. Also included is a silent auction, a keynote, and an introduction by Barbara Ann O’Leary of Directed by Women Catalyst.

Our opening film will be Reel Herstory: The Real Story of Reel Women directed by Ally Acker and narrated by Jodie Foster. The film follows the women pioneers of filmmaking from the birth of the industry through the talkies.

Our second film is Wonder Women: The Untold Story of American Superheroines The history of fictional female heroes in Western media from Wonder Woman’s creation onward. Featuring Gloria Steinem, actors Lynda Carter and Lindsey Wagner, and a colorful cast of scholars, writers, and fans, the film challenges pop culture’s gender biases by looking at how Wonder Woman’s storyline changed over time while considering how women are rarely depicted as heroic, powerful, or world-changing.

We close with the 5-time-award-winning documentary, She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry. A documentary that resurrects the buried history of the outrageous, often brilliant women who founded the modern women’s movement from 1966 to 1971.
